No matter what you’ve been told, spreadsheets are not suitable for running anything other than the smallest start-up business and, even then, they’re not good at it. With only one person being able to work on a spreadsheet, multiple copies tend to proliferate and then nobody knows which is current or it is very difficult to make sure that everybody is on the same page.

It’s also very difficult to make sense of the data in order to make intelligent business decisions and since every spreadsheet is an individual document, it has to be filed in a complex, hierarchical filing system so you can retrieve a spreadsheet when you want.
